Baby Blues

What are the Baby Blues?

The baby blues, also known as the postpartum blues, are feelings of sadness and moodiness that follow for the first couple of days after childbirth. Approximately 50%-75% of women experience baby blues after giving birth. The symptoms, such as excessive crying, are normal and usually subside without treatment within a few weeks

Signs & Symptoms

Common symptoms may include feelings of sadness, overwhelmedness, and trouble sleeping. These symptoms usually dissipate by themselves without treatment but if they last more than 2 weeks, it is important to raise this concern to a health care provider as it could lead to a more concerning condition called postpartum depression.

When to Seek Help

Even though the baby blues are considered a mild form of postpartum depression, it is important to acknowledge and address the challenges that accompany the baby blues. With the help and proper treatments, your healthcare provider will diagnose and monitor your symptoms so that they do not progress for longer than two weeks.
