Postpartum Mental Health

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders can affect anyone regardless of culture, age, race, gender, or socioeconomic status. These disorders can take on many forms. The most common types of perinatal disorders, in order of increasing severity, are the baby blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis. The signs and symptoms of these disorders do not always start immediately after childbirth. In fact, the signs and symptoms of these perinatal mood and anxiety disorders can appear anytime during pregnancy and the first twelve months following delivery.

Baby Blues

Baby blues are characterized by symptoms such as mood swings, crying spells, anxiety, and insomnia that last for a shorter period up to 2 weeks after childbirth.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is characterized by symptoms such as feelings of sadness or loneliness that last for more than 2 weeks after childbirth.

Postpartum Psychosis

Postpartum psychosis is characterized by confusion, disorientation, obsessive thoughts about your baby, hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is characterized by mood swings, anxiety, fear, hopelessness, and diminished ability to think clearly.
